Activity Overview

Learning Objectives
  • To introduce students to genre of storytelling
  • To teach students that everyone has an important story to share with the world
  • To introduce students to multimedia technology (audio, video, photography, PNN web pages) and using multimedia to support student discovery and hands-on learning
  • To connect with and learn about students from various cultures
  • To practice skill of posing and responding to (in written and verbal forms) questions in English (sentence structure, questioning, grammar, mechanics, etc.)
  • To build a supportive, interactive learning community where students co-construct knowledge

Materials
  • Computers
  • Digital audio recording device, video camera, photo camera
  • Index cards
  • pens, pencils, paper
Time
  • approximately one hour
Activity #1
  1. Students will work in pairs.  Each pair will receive a small stack of index cards.  Each card will pose a different question.  Students will randomly select cards and will respond to the questions, first as a verbal Pair/Share, then in written form.  If students select a question to which they do not wish to respond, they may simply select an alternate card.
GOAL: a.  Students will respond (in written form) to as many questions as time will allow.  b. Each student should craft an individual response to each question.
  2. After students have written their responses, they should check in with the teacher or Lauren for grammar/mechanics/sentence structure support.
Activity #2

  1. While students are working on the above activity, Lauren should select three students to oversee the multimedia stations, which are as follows:
  • audio station
  • video station
  • photography station
2.  Each pair will rotate to as many stations as time allows to complete the following tasks:
  • Audio
  1. Students may record responses to their questions using a digital audio recorder.  Students are encouraged to share their responses in both English and their native languages.
  2. Students will think of a question or questions that they would like to ask students from other places- these questions will be sent to a classroom in Poland as well as some other classrooms in other countries and communities (possibly Ghana, definitely San Francisco international students, etc.).
  • Video: Students will share their responses in video format (same process as above for both Steps 1 and 2).
  • Photography: Students will be photographed so that their photographs may be posted on the PNN La Puente webpages next to their written and audio/video responses.
Rotation Format
  • The rotation format should work if there are approximately 6-8 students at one station at a time.
